NOTES ON THE FIXTURE [By St. Clair.] After about thirty-six hours good rain earlier in the week, the course at Ashburton was in excellent condition, and fast times were recorded. Despite the strong counter-attraction at Christ-

Saturday’s Meetings

church in the Ranfurly Shield match, there was a fairly good attendance, but owing to three unusually large dividends being returned in the third race there was a shrinkage in the remaining four races, and tho £6,164 handled was £258 less than at the same meeting last year. The win machine handled £3,147 10s, and the place machine £3,016 10s, The racing was interesting, but the_ chances of quite a number of horses in the galloping events were spoiled by tho bad starting. * * * * Huntley was withdrawn from tho Longbeacn Hurdle Handicap, and Royal Limond (£BO and £66), Don Jose (£79 and £49s), and Nightcap (£53 and £35) were the best backed. Tea Garden and Don Jose led Advance Camp over the initial fence, then Tea Garden went on by himself, and was two lengths clear of Royal Limond, with Advance Camp next, and Nightcap and Rational 11. whipping in the field. Going to the far turn Tea Garden drew out four lengths clear of Advance Camp and Royal Limond, and was three lengths in front of Royal Limond as he turned into the straight. Tea Garden easily held his advantage racing down the straight and won very comfortably by three lengths from Don Jose, with Advance Camp half a length off third. - Nightcap was fourth, and Rational 11. and Royal Limond were last. The winner was the outsider of the field, and is by Tea Tray from Gardenia, « » • • Manetho was the only withdrawal from the Fairfield Hack Handicap, and Nightly, by Nightraid—Miss Muriel (£l27s and £B9s), The Masquerader (£9B and £7os), Southdown (£79s and £79), Errantry (£46s and £3Bs), and Drumfire (£42 and £6O) the best backed.

After a long delay at the barrier the field was sent away to a straggling start, only Niggerhead, Royal Amphora, Nightly, The Masquerader, and Errantry being in the first division. After a furlong bad been covered Royal Amphora was in charge from Niggerhead, The Masquerader, Davolo, and Nightly. Racing round the home turn Royal Amphora was still in charge, with Niggerhead, Davolo, The Masquerader, Nightly, Top Rank, and Drumfire next. At the distance Nightly challenged Royal Amphora, and in a good struggle to the post beat him by a head. The Masquerader was three lengths away third, two lengtlis clear of Errantry, with Davolo, Southdown, and Drumfire next. •» * * * General Wrack was withdrawn from the Selma Harness Trot, and Garry Thorpe ' (£6B and £6ss), Coleno Parrish (£6ss and £sls), Compass (£65 and £76s), the Vanity Fair—Epilogue bracket (£64 and £76), and Clem Dawe (£6os and £57) the best backed. The last-named was slow to go away and Marie Celeste led Garry Thorpe, Happy Bird, Enunaline’s Last and Imperial Nelson through the straight. After going three furlongs Imperial Nelson ran to the front and led Mario Celeste, Rewai, and Vanity Fair along the back. Marie Celeste was in charge again at the far turn, and led Vanity Fair and. Rewai into the straight. Mario Celeste drew right away in the run home and beat Vanity Fair by six lengths. Rewai was three lengths further back third and then followed Elvo, Garry Thorpe, and Emmalinc’s Last. The winner, by Man o’ War—Princess Zoa, was one of the outsiders of the field, and returned big dividends on both machines. • « Flower was withdrawn from the Ashburton Handicap, and'Ramo (£ll4 and £6B), Shatter (£ll3 and £7ss), and Cricket Bat, by Winning Hit—Equipment (£97s and £7ss) the best backed. Chrysology was clear of Martian Chief at the end of a furlong, and as ho entered the back stretch was two lengths clear of Shatter, Martian Chief, and Cricket Bat, who were racing together After rounding the far turn Chrysology drew but four lengths clear of Shatter and Cricket Bat, who appeared to get knocked back at this stage. Chrysology was five lengths clear of Shatter at the home turn, with Cricket Bat and Martian Chief close up. Shatter shut up directly he got in line for home, and Martian Chief followed suit shortly afterwards. Cricket Bat closed on Chrysology over the last half-fnrlong and in-a good finishing effort just got up to beat him by half a head. Tout Le Mond was three _lengths away third, with Ramo a similar distance off fourth, and Shatter a poor fifth. • • • • Adult was withdrawn from the Ponscroft Hack Handicap, and Sweet Agnes, by Lord Quex—Rua Agnes (£lO2 and £67s), Doiran (£95 and £7Bs), Heather Glow (£72s and £77), Water Polo (£26 and £4ls), and Elude (£l9s and £3O) the best backed. Fiat Lux and Sky Lass were chopped out at the start and Pharaoh and Cleaner led Eupator and Doiran over the first furlong. Rounding the far turn Sweet Agnes had displaced Pharaoh, and with Cleaner led Heather Glow and Doiran across the top. Cleaner was first into the straight from Sweet Agnes, Doiran, and Heather Glow. Doiran challenged Sweet Agnes at the distance post, but failed by a short head to reach her at the winning post. Heather Glow was two lengths away third, followed by Water Polo, Shootist, and Bright Shade.

Rebel Song, by Robespierre—Toti dal Monte (£22o} and £ll6}), Hurlingham (£75 and £72), and Grecian Prince (£6l} and £62}) were the best backed in the Spring Handicap. Full Crop and Hurlingham were the smartest to jump out, Water Power and Copyist being caught unready, and the former pair led Rebel Song and Grecian Prince, who were also racing together, round the far turn and across the top. Full Crop dropped out at the turn into the straight, where both Grecian Prince and Rebel Song moved up. At the distance Rebel Song joined Hurlingham, and over the last few strides the favourite drew out to beat Hurlingham by a long neck. Copyist came from a long way back to finish third, three lengths aw i ay, and Full Crop was fourth. Water Power last, * M * •» Tangatu (£l34} and £107), Little Kelson (£lo2} and £7o}), Smoke Screen (£97} and £76}), the Doll Dance — Royal Escort bracket (£9o} and £BS), and College Boy (£76 and £s3}) were the best backed for the Rakaia Harness Trot.

Ezywurk broke badly at the start, and Smoke Screen led Ciaranda, Anthum, and Great Minto through the straight. Racing along the back College Boy ran up into second place, but broke badly near the six-furlong post, and Smoke Screen drew well clear from Claranda racing round the far turn and across the top. With three furlongs to go both Great Minto and the favourite moved up, and they followed Smoke Screen, who was still four or five lengths to the good, into the straight. Smoke Screen looked all over a winner until about 50yds from the post, where both Great Minto and Tangatu joined him. In a great finish between these three Great Minto scored by a short head from Tangatu, with Smoke Screen a short half-length off third. Royal Escort, Claranda, and Doll Dance were next. The winner is by Great Audubon from Princess Minto, and though second favourite on the place machine was sixth favourite on the Straight-out totalisator.

The performance demonstrated that Winooka can negotiate bad tracks well and also fast ones.” The hope is expressed that he will be given an opportunity to race in fields of the quality which made him Australian champion. As yet the horse has had no opportunity to prove his championship calibre.

The ‘ Seattle Post ’ says that Winooka could have von by ton lengths if Britt had so desired.
