His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy left for Christchurch this morning to preside over the Supremo Court sessions. A large gathering of officers of the Chief Post Office, Wellington, tendered a farewell yesterday to Mr T. C. HobbsJones, superintendent of mails, who is retiring after forty years’ service. The Chief Postmaster (Mr J. M. M'Lean): made the presentation of a travelling rug and fountain pen to the departing officer. Mr Hobbs-Jones will take up residence in Auckland. Mr Gilbert Matbeson was presented by the staff r.f Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co. Ltd. with an easy chair on tiro occasion of his leaving the company’s employ. In making th© presentation, the general manager (Mr Taylor) referred to Mr Matheson’s long and faithful service with the company as their travelling fertiliser salesman, and wished the recipient th© best of health and prosperity in the future. Mr and Mrs W. A. Erasmuson and Mr L. R. Duuster, of Christchurch, arrived in Dunedin this afternoon. Mr William Tyne, whose death ocenred this morning at his home in Eden street, was a well-known figure in the business life of the city for many years. For fifty years he was a member of the staff of Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen, from whose service he retired in January of this year after being m charge of the boot department for very many years. Deceased, who took a keen interest in sport, played both Rugby football and cricket in his younger days, and recently played bowls. He was a member of the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen a Association, serving on the executive of that body for some time. Deceased is survived by his widow and three sous and daughters. Mrs A. Herbert,- who has been acting for the past six* years as one of the employees’ representatives on the Board of Managers of the King Edward Technical College, was re-elected by a substantial majority by a meeting of the election committee held for that piifj©** last Thursday evening. ' , An old Dunedin boy, Mr Charles Diamond, has recently retired from the .position of manager in Western Australia of the Commercial Bank of Australia, and to mark the occasion an informal dinner was given in his honour in Perth. The Lord Mayor of Perth (J. T. Franklin) presided over the assembly, which included the Premier (Mr P. Collier), Sir Walter James, K.C., Mr H. B. Jackson, K.C., Mr J. M'Callum Smith, M.L.A., Mr G. E. Buckley, who has succeeded Mr Diamond, and many prominent professional and business men. Several speakers eugolised Mr Diamond’s worth in business and in sport. Mr Diamond was born in Dunedin and educated at th© Christian Brothers’ High School, later attending St. Patrick’s, Wellington.
