CARRIAGE OF APPLES
IMPORTANT EXPERIMENTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, September 15. (Received September 16, at 9.40 a.m.) An experiment of vital interest to Australia and New Zealand has begun at the Governmeut Research Laboratory at Ditton in packing apples. A model hold, with a capacity of 16,000 cubic feet, contains 7,000 cases of English apples. The conditions are exactly akin to a voyage from Australia. Australian boxes are being used because of the absence of bulge, which is thought to be a factor affecting air distribution.
Tin hold will ho kept at an even temperature. A thermometer will automatically register externally the heat generated by tbe fruit and the poisoning of the air with carbon dioxide, including the development of moulds and bacteria.
It is hoped from this experiment that tho best corrective methods will be discovered.
