OBITUARY
MR W. T. BOND. _ t [Per United Press Association.] NELSON, September 13. The death is reported of Mr William Thornton Bond, in his ninety-third year, a highly respected resident of Nelson, and for many years one of the proprietors of the ‘ Colonist.’ Ho was born in Lancaster, England, and when' a few weeks old, was taken by his parents to the West Indies, where his father had a sugar plantation. Both parents died of yellow fever when he was ten years of age, and he returned to Lancaster. He was educated at the Lancaster Grammar School, and served bis apprenticeship on the Lancaster * Guardian.’ In 1862 he came to New. Zealand in the ship Electra, landing at Nelson in the following year. He took an active interest in all movements for the betterment of the people,* and had been a member of the Foresters Lodge since 1871. Mr Percy, Bond, managing director of the Hawera ‘ Star,’ is a son. The other son was the late Mr J. H. C. Bond, for many years dominion superintendent of the New. Zealand Shipping Company. MacCallum, leader writer and book' reviewer for the ‘ Sydney Morning Herald ’; aged forty-nine. His father. Sir Mungo MacCallum, is emeritus professor of modern literature at Sydney University.
