MIDNIGHT PARTIES TO VESUVIUS
CRfiWN PRINCE SETS A NEW FASHION NAPLES, August 20. Vesuvius is likely to become a fashionable resort for midnight parties if tho example set by the Prince of Piedmont, King Victor Emanuel’s heir, is followed. The Prince invited the officers of the 81st Regiment of Infantry to a banquet at the foot of the volcano, followed by an accent to the summit. A special train took the company, with the director of the observatory, up the Vesuvian railway, and from the observatory they went on foot to the edge of the crater. The pyrotechnics begun by the mountain a month ago gtill continue, and the Prince and his party remained till midnight watching the spectacle. The reflection of the flames in the crater was seen over the bay, and the Prince decided to repeat the invitation to the officers of the 40th Regiment, also stationed at Naples. His example has established a precedent which others appear likely to follow, of organising midnight ascents to the crater.
