NEW MINISTER OF WORKS
MR MACMILLAN'S CAREER

WELLINGTON, January 25. The appointment of the Hon, C. E.Macmillan as Minister of Public Works in succession to Mr Coates is shortly to be announced. He will thus be holding, in addition to his present portfolios (Agriculture and Mines), a most vital portfolio. Mr Macmillan already has experience of Public Works administration, for during Mr Coates's absence at Ottawa, he temporarily took that portfolio during the interesting stage of the Arapuni breakdown, and the final restorative work. He shares with Mr Coates, the confident opinion that the Arapuni hydro-electric undertaking will become a complete and permanent success.
Mr Macmillan made a somewhat sensational entry into politics ten years ago, when Sir Joseph Ward contested Tauranga in an effort to return into public life, but was defeated by Mr Macmillan, whose long local record as a' county councillor, Mayor of Tauranga,; and an active dairy association director,gave him a considerable advantage. Mr Macmillan entered the Coalition Ministry following the 1932 general election,which saw the defeat of the then Minister of Agriculture, Mr David Jones,
