Cockroach racing lias been imported from the Riviera to Montparnasse, Paris, and impecunious artists who cannot sell pictures try to win the price of their dinner by “ hacking their fancy.” The “ course ” is about 12ft long ami is made of glass, partitioned into ten lanes. The cockroaches arc placed at the starting gate. When the gate is lifted a brilliant light comes on, and ns cockroaches dislike light they make a rush to the inviting darkness at the end of the lane.
