Lady Allen and Miss Rona Allen left this morning on a visit to Christchurch.

Miss Dorothy Allen, who has been the guest of her mother. Lady Allen, left this morning for Tiniaru, where she will stay for a few days on her wav home to Christchurch.

The engagement is announced of Margaret, elder daughter of the late Mr James Livingston and Mrs A. E. A. M'Dougall, “ Kenwood,” Dnnottar, and Lieutenant Richard Ryan, R.N., son of Admiral F. E. C. Ryan, C.8.E., and Mrs Ryan, England.

Miss Holland left on Tuesday morning on a holiday visit to AVellington.

Miss Cook, St. Leonards, who returned to Now Zealand by the Remucra, reached Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Leslie Wilson returned on Saturday from a visit to Timaru.

Miss E. Cole, Wanganui, provincial secretary oi the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, who came south to attend the Dominion Executive meeting in Timaru, is at present visiting Dunedin, and is the guest of Mrs Denton Leech, Tainui.

The Cliffs Cabaret, Cargill’s Castle, opened the cabaret season last Saturday with a most enjoyable dance. Some time has elapsed since a cabaret was held in Dunedin, and the management of “ The Cliffs ” aims to make too Saturday supper dance the rendezvous of dancers throughout tho season. ” Kcnz Orpheans ” have been engaged to supply music. No effort has been spared to ensure the success of tho cabaret; the ballroom is tastefully decorated, and the floor is in excellent condition.

On Wednesday evening last Mrs J. D. Randlegave a delightful party at her home in Roslyn for her daughter, Hetty. Members, of the local branch are invited to bo present. Entrance will be by the door on the right at the top of the stairs. Dame Sybil has consented to speak on the work of the League.

The' mayoress (Airs R. S. Black) gave a delightful children’s party on Afonday afternoon at her residence, Ross street, in honour of the fourth birthday of her little daughter Helen. Seated at the head of the table, which was decorated to suit the tastes of the young guests, Helen , looked very charming in a frock of shell pink georgette.

Aliss Rebecca Lazarus (a pupil of Aliss Bessie Thompson) has received cable advice from Trinity College of Music, London, that she was successful in gaining the diploma of fellowship in elocution.

A pleasant function took place in the editor’s room of the ‘ Evening Post,’ Wellington, last week, when members of the literary staff assembled to say good-bye to Mrs M. H. Chatfield, lady editor for the past twenty years, who has been granted leave of absence in order to make a tour abroad. The editor (Mr J. Parker) referred in terms of high praise to the excellence of Mrs Chatliold’s work for the paper and to her social service activities, and, in presenting her with a travelling rug from the staff, wished her a pleasant holiday and a safe return. Cheers were given for Mi-s Chatfield, who suitably replied. Mrs Chatfield had previously been entertained by members of the various women’s organisations in Wellington and presented with a substantial cheque. She left by the Wanganella for Sydney en route for South Africa.

During the week-end Sir Lindo and Lady Ferguson were “at home ” at their residence, “ Wychwood,” in honour of Dame Sybil Thorndike. Mr Lewis Casson, and members of the company. The hostess received the guests in the drawing room, attired in a frock of burgundy georgette, with beautiful hand embroideries. This charming room was effectively decorated with roses and carnations. Tea was served in the dining room, where the table was daintily arranged with vases of sweet pens. Glorious Wanaka, of world-wide renown, is a land of many pleasant and wonderful surprises.
