NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

FINALS OF THE SINGLES WON BY E. D. ANDREWS AND MISS NICHOLLS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 23. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were concluded to-day in lino weather before a very large attendance. E. D. Andrews outplayed C. E. Malfroy in the most brilliant game seen for years to win the men’s singles. Miss Dulcie Nicholls won the ladies’ singles title, beating Miss Marjorie Macfarlane in a long, strenuously-fought base-line game, in which the latter was mostly .behind, and in which she had match point against her early in the second set. it was a worthy final from both. Malfroy and Seay won the men s doubles, beating the Frances in a fiveset match' of fluctuating fortunes, in which all four, between individual patches of brilliance, sank to mediocrity. Malfroy’s quickness at the .net was the deciding factor in the fifth set. Seay was the steadiest of the winners, and L. Franco was the outstanding player of the losing pair. The wonderfully steady Jobbing of Mrs R. P. Adams was responsible for the win which she and Mrs Dykes obtained in the final of the ladies’ doubles. It made openings for Mrs Dykes at the net, and also threw one of the opposition out of the game in almost every stroke of each rally. The losers drove and smashed well, but were-forced into mistakes at vital times. The final of the mixed doubles, in which Andrews and Mrs Dykes met Malfroy and Miss Macfarlane, was a brilliant encounter. Andrews s faulty position at half-court and Malfroy s speed at the net were responsible for the victory scored by Malfroy and Miss Macfarlane. Both ladies played excellently, returned the fiercest serves and quick volleys and smashes with great accuracy. Miss Macfarlane scarcely missed anything from the back line. Results: — MEN’S SINGLES.
