ST. KILDA BOROUGH

COUNCIL'S FIRST MEETING THIS , YEAR The St. Kikla Borough Council held its first meeting for 1933 last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie) and Crs H. H. Leary, d. Robinson, T. D. B. Roy, J. A. Cameron, G. Glue, G. Stratton, A. D. Edgar, and E. Longworth. The accounts passed for payment amounted to £1,400 odd. It was reported that since the last meeting a total of 13,997,000 gallons of water had been consumed, at a cost of £349 18s 6d. The fortnightly average cost was £ll6 12s lOd, as against £ll3 9s for the average previous fortnight. In his report, which covered work done from December 3 to January 14, the foreman suggested sealing streets and footpaths during the ensuing fortnight- An estimate was submitted for the sealing of Victoria road footpath, from Victoria street to Queen’s drive, and also an estimate for penetration of the Victoria road intersection at Queen’s drive and Prince Albert road. There had been 200 unemployed working for the past month grassing streets, digging sections, etc. The report was adopted. The traffic and sanitary inspector s report stated that twenty-eight drivers’ licenses had been issued, thirteen drivers tested, and six heavy traffic licenses issued. Traffic duty had been performed, and a watch kept for overloading of lorries on the borough streets. There had been one notification of an infectious disease, and a disinfection was performed. Stables had been visited and the owners requested to regularly remove manure. Complaints had received attention.—Adopted. An application for a permit to make alterations to a shop and to build a verandah was received. —It was stated that the work had been commenced before permission had been obtained, and Or Leary objected to the permit being issued on those grounds. After some discussion it was decided to grant the permit, Cr Leary wishing his name to be recorded against the motion. It was further decided that the applicant be informed that as he started the work before getting permission it was a breach of the by-law. It was decided that owners of properties be asked to cut their hedges back to the level of the fence line touching the footpaths.
