AMATEUR CYCLING

LARGE FIELDS AND GOOD RACING The largest fields of the season, good racing, and spirited finishes made the evening meeting staged at tho Caledonian Ground last night by the Otago Amateur Cycling Club one of the most enjoyable of the season, and the presence •of T. Grose, the Christchurch rider, added further to the attractiveness of a programme which was put through in good style by a keen band of officials, who included Messrs J. A. Johnstone (president), A. Ockwell, F. Greenfield, sen., H. Ockwell, H. Thompson, and E. L. Macassey (president of the Otago Centre). The half-mile handicap was won by T. Grose, who timed his sprint nicely and came through on the inside to beat J. C. Fogarty, who went right round tho field, and then managed to fight out a great finish with Grose. Although the riders were inclined to play a waiting game until the last lap, the final of the mile and a-half handicap was one of the best finishes for_ some time, C. Hansen (who was third in the half-mile handicap) riding a welljudged race to win. He also annexed the one mile pursuit race, in which two riders started along the straight and another two on the back-stretch, the finishing lines being marked on the respective straights. Fogarty was second in this race, and Grose third. A. J. Hay was another rider who showed good form during the evening, finishing second in the mile and a-half event. There were about 300 spectators, who thoroughly enjoyed the novelty race between a tandem, ridden by Fogarty and Grose, and a cycle, ridden by Hay, Fogarty and Grose getting home with a length "to spare. A novice race and a hoys’ event were included, the latter drawing a particularly good entry. Results :
