NOTES ON THE RACING

[Special to the ‘Star.’) Chief Line, favourite for the opening event, had an easy victory. Nightguard acted as pacemaker when tile field settled down, and led into the straight from Palace, Jayson, and Clangor. Chief Lino collared the leader at the false rail, and had the race in hand from that point. Golden Horn, who was slowly away, finished on into second place, well clear of Nightguard, and then came Clangor, King Thomond, Palace, Jayson, and Monastic.

Chief Light scored an impressive win in the Kclburn Handicap. He followed Zcebrugge, Bee Acre, N'avaho, and Aziilea into the straight, and when Navaho supplanted Zeebruggo inside the distance he tackled Navaho, and in a close tussle won by half a length. Zeebrugge bung on under punishment to gain third money on the post from Lyrical. Tippling. Courtyard, Azalea, Importance, and Socket were next.

Dole was at a short price, in the Hopeful Stakes, and beginning the best endeavoured to win from flagfall, but was in distress 100yds from the post, at which point Red Manfred collared him and beat him home easily. Golden Hair finished strongly, and only just failed to overhaul the tiring Dole for second money. Pegged Exchange and Quietly were next. Counterplay and Sweet Agnes were not produced owing to the former not having recovered from bis mishap on the track and to Sweet Agnes contracting a cold.

The Wingatui-trained Kemal Pasha outclassed the opposition in the Melrose Handicap. He was again slow to move off, bnt at the end of three furlongs was out in front, and led into the straight from Kupator, Tea Garden, Nebulae,Broken Rule, and Demise. Nothing had a chance with him in the run home, and he had three lengths to spare from Chile, who came > from a rear position to snatch secohd money from Eupn’tor on the post. Niggerhead was close up next, in front of Nebulae, Cardinal Moon, and Tea Garden. Morepoik and Demise were well back. * « • * The winner is a three-year-old gelding by Gay Shield, and was purchased as a yearling by his present owner for 12ogs“ Chile and Kupator were disposed of at the Greenwood dispersal sale.

Seatown, the rank outsider of the Summer Handicap field, effected a big surprise by getting up in a blanket finish and scoring a narrow victory. Princess Argosy had a three-length lead from Great Star entering the straight, the pair being followed by Merry Peel, Refresher, and Red Heckle, with Seatown and Shatter at the rear of a close-running field. Princess Argosy was in trouble inside the distance. Red Heckle forged his way to the front, and just as be looked a comfortable winner Seatown and then Shatter appeared on the scene. Red Heckle weakened in the last couple of strides, and Seatown got the verdict by a head, with Shatter a neck away. Gay Crest was two lengths back in front of Great Star, Refresher, Chocksay, Merry Peel, Princess Argosy, and Concentrate.

This was Soatown’s first win for some months past. Pie was offered for sale at Trentham last week, but there was no bid for him.

• • • • The Douro Cun winner, Aiguille, was made favourite for the Thorndon Handicap, and was only beaten on the post by the moderately-supported Miladi, who formerly carried the Corry delivery. Royal Bengal led into the straight from Drum Fire, Rational 11.. Martian Chief, Aiguille, Argentic, and imminent. The four first-named gradually petered out in the straight, and Aiguille drew out from Argentic and Kminent. Aiguille had those beaten a few strides from the post, but had to submit to a brilliant finishing effort by Miladi, who secured a head verdict.

Eminent, who had a bad passage in the straight and appeared to impede Argentic’s progress, was two lengths away next in front of Gay Court, Martian Chief, Argentic, Wise Choice. Ranelagh, and Juniper. Grecian Prince again dwelt on the mark, while Juniper was also slow away.

An exciting finish was staged in the City Handicap. Souchong, the favourite, was the smartest away, and entered the course proper in front of Golden Wings, Arvada, Pomp, Lordly Knight, and Cricket Bat, all in close order. This was the order to within 50yds of the post. Pomp then looked the likely win'ner, but Lordly Knight got up to beat him on the post, while Cricket Bat forced his way through and snatched third place in the last stride. Souchong was a head away, closely attended by Golden Wings with Orapai, Farmer, ami Arvada next.

The Kaitoke Handicap attracted the biggest pool of the meeting, and speculation took a wide range. The first to show prominence on to the course proper were Haulbowline, - Slippery, Shining Gold, Hurlingham, Idolize, and Navaho. These were all spread across tho course inside the distance, but a little further on Navaho showed out, and Shining Gold and Good Hunting challenged him. In a spectacular tussle Navaho won by a head from Good Hunting, who beat Shining Gold by a short length. Wasteland was close up next in front of Pedestal, Might, Haulbowline, and Worship.
