WESTERN SPRINGS SPEEDWAY [Put United J'kess Association.] AUCKLAND, January 22. Keen competition between some of the world’s finest cinder track riders was witnessed by a crowd of about 3,000 people at Western .Springs Speedway last evening. Tbc times were generally good, and there were many exciting contests. A. Mattson, dominion champion, crushed heavily when his motor seized in the second event. Ho escaped with a bruised shoulder, and took part in the later races. The race between E. Lang Lou, world’s champion, and W. Phillips, challenger, for the gold helmet held by Langtou proved one of tlio finest of tlio evening, Phillips winning by a narrow margin after Laugton had led most of the distance.
