IRISH FREE STATE

ELECTION CAMPAIGN MR DE VALERA’S MANIFESTO Press Association— By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 21. Mr De Valera, in a manifesto, appeals for a strong Government to enable the pursuance of a policy to continue for four or five years, leading to a “ reasonably self-contained, self-suffi-cient Irish Ireland.” He proposes to abolish the Senate. If the second chamber is retained the membership will be considerably reduced. He will also reduce the membership of the Dail, cut the higher salaries in the Civil service, and promises a Bill to save the railways from' extinction, unifying the control of railway and road transport. He adds: “ The Fianna Fail desires that the Irish and British peoples should be on the friendliest terms. We shall continue to strive to get the British statesmen to realise that lasting peace can only be secured on the basis of the Irish people having liberty freely to determine their Government institutions and relations with Britain. No trade agreements will be made restricting the protection necessary to preserve the farmers’ home market and develop manufactures.” RIVAL PARTIES' CLAIMS - LONDON, January 22, (Received January 23, at 11 a.m.) The greatest uncertainty as to the outcome of the polls still prevails. Tho full results will not be known till the week-end. Both the Cosgraveites and the Government-eum-Labour forces claim that they will have from eightytwo to eighty-five members. A heavy poll is likely. Opinion is growing that the election will result in a stalemate with another appeal to the country soon. ‘SECRET SETTLEMENT WITH BRITAIN A CANDIDATE’S ALLEGATION. LONDON.
