PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON CENTURY TO TINDILL [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 21. . Tho second day’s play in the Pluuket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington ended with the visitors requiring only 15 to obtain a first innings lead and' with four wickets still in hand. The weather was gloriously fine and the wicket fast hut easy. In reply to Auckland’s score of 366 Wellington made a poor start, Cameron being caught in the slips off Weir in the fourth over of the day. Dempster partnered Tindill, his first pupil to gain representative honours, and they made a sterling attempt to retrieve matters. Dempster refused to take risks and' played all the bowling confidently until given out Ibw to a shooter which he appeared to touch. Tindill and O’Brien added 61 for the third wicket. The former played sparkling forward shots, although somewhat restrained after lunch. _ Two catches behind the wickets dismissed O’Brien and Blandford in three balls, putting Wellington on tho defensive, hut another useful stand followed by Tindill and Lamasou. Tho latter batted soundly until given out Ibw in playing forward to Garrard. • Tho Auckland attack was never more than steady and tired badly after tea. Tindill, partnered by James, reached an excellent century in 280 minutes. Shortly after he mishit Garrard to Vivian at short forward leg. He gave a flawless display with tho exception of a stumping chance at 73, showing brilliant footwork and perfect defence. His. display stamps him definitely as one of tho most promising batsmen in the dominion. He hit nine 4’s.

Meanwhile James had been playing magnificently, hooking and driving with freedom and power and forcing the pace at tho right time. After Tindill’s dismissal lie quietened down somewhat. Parsloe, when 7, was dropped by Dacro at short backward leg off Garrard. Later Pearson dropped James on tho boundary off Bush. The two chances proved costly, as James and Parsloe batted solidly till stumps, playing Wellington into a winning position. James provided the finest exhibition he has over given in Auckland'. The home team’s bowling lacked sting throughout tho day, Garrard being tho only one really to trouble the batsmen, although Vivian and Weir both bowled Valiantly. Bush made pace occasionally. Apart from dropped catches at a critical stage. Auckland’s fielding was first class, Mills and Matheson frequently saving brilliantly. Hampton was disappointing behind the wickets.
