MYSTERY ASSAULT
WOMAN STRUCK DOWN IN KITCHEN (Special to tub ‘Star.’] AUCKLAND, January 20. A mysterious assault which occurred in Green Lane early this afternoon is being- investigated, by detectives. The victim was a young married woman, Mrs Nellie Harris Qa well-known athlete), aged about 20,: employed as a domestic by Mr and Mrs W. I. Hancock, of 237 Great South road, Green Lane. It is alleged that while engaged in cleaning the gas oven, which is situated in a recess just off the back door of the house. Mrs Harris was set upon by a man, who struck her on the back of the head with some instrument. She was alone in the house at the time the assault occured—about midday. At 12.30 a son of Mr Hancock arrived home for lunch, and found Mrs Harris lying with her head almost in the oven, unconscious. The gas was off, and the oven bore the appearance of having been cleaned, as the shelves and racks were lying nearby on the floor.
