THE CHURCH AND THE WORKER.
10 THB SDITOE. Sir,—l take it that all Christian ministers of our city, are in agreement with the policy of Love and Brotherhood expressed by His Excellency the Governor-General. I respectfully suggest that these gentlemen take up the cause of the workers, “ many of whom are members of their own congregations,” and insist that no further cuts be made on the bare existence allowance of these men. The apathy of our religious leaders regarding the conditions under which the workers live is largely responsible for the apathy of the-men toward the church. Expressions of regret and sympathy do not fill pantry shelves. How would our ministers act if their pay varied with the weather and ceased altogether for a week or two at Christmas, as is the case of the labourer in his, a so-called, constant job? This grinding of the worker, without whom no wealth is produced, is an inhuman practice born of greed, and is wholly contrary to the principles of love and brotherhood, unselfishness and service, so often advocated but so rarely practiced. Christianity in practice is what is needed. The cjiurch, if it is loyal to Christ, will declare itself on the side of the oppressed. Our ministers are shepherds of the flock, and as such should protect them from beasts of prey, even if they cannot lead them into good pastures. It is nonsense to talk of love and brotherhood and allow an inhuman system to go unchallenged. How can anyone enjoy luxury if ono whom ho loves is suffering want and misery? Better not to mention love than to attempt to mix it with selfishness and indifference.—l am, ec., G. Seeking. December 14.
