COUNCIL MOTOR CARS.
TO THB EDITOR. Sir.—lt was very'gratifying to read that the City Council is waking up to the fact that it is costing the raptepayers £4,000 a year to maintain motor cars for the use of its servants in the carrying out of their duties. Crs Clark and Mitchell are to be commended upon the stand they have taken in requesting an immediate investigation into this matter. It seems an enormous sum to be spent annually in conveying employees from place* to place. 1 understand that the council has a contract with a taxi company to meet its needs in this respect, so why not cut out the cars, and give hiring a fair trial for, say, six months. I feel sure that the ultimate result would be a considerable saving to the ratepayers. I sincerely hope that those councillors who have the city’s interests at heart and who are endeavouring to effect economies in its administration will receive every support in carrying this matter to a satisfactory conclusion. —I am, etc., Ratepayer.
