INTOXICATED MOTORIST

STRUGGLE WITH POLICE At the Police Court this morning, before Air J. R. Bartholomew, S.AI., Alaxwell Al‘Gregor pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in charge of a motor car in Arthur street and to wilfully damaging uniform trousers, valued at iil 13s, the porperty of Constable Saycr, ’while in the execution of his duty. Sub-inspector Cameron said tliat about 2.40 this morning Constable Saver was on duty in tiie Octagon, and heard the engine of a motor ear roaring as it was being driven up Stuart street. As tho car arrived at the Octagon the constable noticed it being driven in a zig-zag course, and it went over tho footpath in Princes street. The constable endeavoured to stop the driver by flashing his torch and putting up his hand, hut the driver took no notice. - The constable jumped into a passing taxi, and overtook the defendant in Arthur street, where he had stopped.' On taking him out of tho car the constable found that he was quite drunk, and ns he was being placed in tho taxi he struggled yioJentlv, the constable’s trousers being damaged beyond repair. He again put up a violent struggle at the police station, and had to he put into a padded cell. He was a single man who had been employed as a canvasser and returned recently to his home in Dunedin from the North Island. It transpired that twenty minutes before tne defendant was arrested the car had been hired out to him, and inquiries were being made into this matter. The defendant asked for tho suppression of Ids name, but the Alagistralc said that tho general public had to be thought of, and no order was made. The defendant said tliat this was tho first time lie had been in trouble, and he guaranteed it would be the last. He was out of work. Tho Alagistrato said lie would take into consideration the accused’s cirfiimstiiuccs ami also the tinio that tho offence had taken place. On the former charge lie was fined £5, his license was cancelled, and ho was prohibited from driving for two years. On tno other charge he was convicted and ordered to make good the damage (£1 13s), in default seven days’ imprisonment.
