Tolan Wins in Record Time

Honours to Ireland in the Hurdles

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.

LOS ANGELES, August 1. (Received August 2, at 11.30 a.m.) The first heat of the semi-final in the 100' metres was slow, comparatively, though there was speedy company in the race. A blanket would have covered all six participants at the finish. Yoshioka broke fast, giving him the advantage. He led to within 10yds of the finish, and seemed the winner, but Tolan (the negro) came forward to nose the Japanese out, and behind him followed the South African, Joubert, for second place. Yoshioka thus took third place. Williams was Gin behind in fourth place, and Elliott close on him. fifth, Koernig sixth. The second heat was run a tenth of a second faster than the first, and Metcalfe’s victory in it was very clear cut. He was almost 18in ahead of Simpson, while Jonath, Luti, Rearson, and Wright were running in that order, but to the eye seemingly abreast. The final heat of the 100 metres saw Yoshioka breaking fast as usual, and leading by better than a yard. He had the lead at first in almost every heat, but was unable to continue the pace. Metcalfe and Tolan at the halfway mark surged forward, and were clearly the superior of the entire company. Metcalfe was a little ahead 10yds from the finish, but Tolan edged him out. Jonath was 2ft behind for third. It seemed a hard fate for Yoshioka to be last. The time equalled the world’s record. Metcalfe was posted first as the victor, but after a long debate the judges decided that Tolan had won by a shade. Tolan thought he had been defeated, and ran over to congratulate his rival, Yoshioka. In the final of the 400 metres hurdles, Tisdall won, winning the race from the start. His timing was so perfect that it was clear that his stride must carry him to victory, and had he not knocked over the last hurdle his 51 8-10 sec would have been a new world’s record. Lord Burghley was fast overtaking Hardin and Taylor, who were running to inferior second and third places, but the Englishman faltered, “ went out of step,” and was compelled to relinquish the possibility of being placed. He finished fourth, with Facelli a disappointing fifth. Results:— 100 METRES.
