THE FRENCH ELECTIONS

M. HERRIDTS POLICY NEWSPAPER COMMENT Press Association—By Telegraph—C ipyright. LONDON, May 10. The ‘ Daily Herald,’ in an editorial, says: “It is clear that the French people are tired of the Tardieu attitude towards foreign, affairs, and want more of the spirit of Locarno and less of tho spirit of Versailles. France’s' policy under M. Herriot should be less rigid and obstinate than under M. Tardieu and M. Laval.” Tho Paris correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ states that the election had an unsatisfactory effect, weakening the Centro parties, which provide the main elements of moderation in tire domestic policy. M. Herriot told the Paris correspondent of the ‘ Evening News’ that he was heartily in support of' the League of Nations, and wanted arbitration on all problems. The ‘ News-Chronicle’s ’ Paris correspondent recalls that M. Herriot championed the Geneva protocol, and was notoriously friendly and sympathetic towards Mr I' Donald. Therefore he may be more tolerant than M. Tardieu respecting disarmament, THE NEW GOVERNMENT TWO COURSES OPEN. PARIS, May 10. When tho new President of the Republic asks M. Herriot to form a Government he will have two courses coalition with the Left consisting of the Radicals and Socialists (though the effect of such a combination on the financial situation is likely to make him hesitate) and, alternatively, the formation of a Government from his own party and the groups in the Centre, including the Democratic Union but not the Socialists. It is considered that cither combination will necessitate intricate and, perhaps, lengthy negotiations. M. Herriot refuses to indicate his intentions. He ' '■s that no decision is possible before Monday, when the committee of the Radical Party will meet. GERMANY HOPEFUL BERLIN, May 10. Germany is cautiously hopeful that the result of the French elections will relax the Franco-German tensioil, but does not expect much alteration in the disarmament and reparations policies.
