PRINCE AS BREWER

Beer lias been brewed in a London brewery which will in all probability be treasured for thirty years or more, and may be worth as much as £6O a bottle, says the ‘ Daily Express.’ It was brewed by tho Prince of Wales when he paid an informal visit to Charrington’s Brewery in Mile End road.

He consented to “ mash ” a special brew, and, watched by a number of employees, operated the controls which started the “ mashing.” It is understood that this special brew will be put away to mature for a long time. It will then bo bottled, and some will doubtless be sent to the Prince. Other bottles, will bo distributed privately. The beer may become as famous as the “ King’s Beer ” which was brewed by King Edward when he visited Burton-on-Trent in 1902, and some of which, when auctioned for charity, realised £6O a bottle. After leaving the brewery the Prince, conducted by Alderman Scolding, Mayor of West Ham, paid a number of visits to the homes of working people. In Park place ho went into a house occupied by Mr and Mrs Easy and their family. “I do hope I have not given you a shock,” ho remarked as he shook hands all round. “ Oh, no! ” replied Mrs Easy. “ They told us to expect someone, but we thought it would be the surveyor.” Tommy Easy, aged seven, was crying because Ills mother had not taken him to the cinema, hut ho quickly dried his eyes when the Prince bent down and shook hands with him. Tho Prince saw some cases of overcrowding. In one house were a man and his wife and four children living in four rooms, while another man and his wife and child occupied two other rooms in the same house. He went into a two-roomed cottage occupied by a man and bis wife and tbeir five daughters, tho eldest sixteen years'okl and the rest at school. Alderman Scolding afterwards said: “At tho end of tho tour I asked tho Prince of Wales what lie thouglit, and ho replied: ‘ I have seen exactly what 1 wanted to sec.’ “ In every house we wont into the Prince insisted on shaking hands with every member of the family, and lie went into every room in each house eye visited, oven tho sculleries and kitchens.

“ In every case it was an absolute surprise visit. Two or three of tho families were having tea when the Prince called.”
