KINDERGARTEN CARNIVAL

I l 'or weeks past the people of Caversham knew there was to be a carnival at Richard Hudson Kindergarten on Saturday last, but in case some had forgotten the school bugle band paraded the street on Friday afternoon with a large placard advertising the fact, so, of course, the kindergarten was the centre of attraction when the day came. Brilliant sunshine, the bright colours of the children’s fancy costumes, and also of the stalls and stallholders added to the gaiety of the scene. A platform had been erected at one end of the kindergarten; this had been transformed into a garden scene, and in the gateway stood one of the kindergarten children dressed as a little girl of long ago. Her green frock fell in little frills to her feet. She wore a green bonnet, little lace mittens, and silver shoes, and carried a Victorian posy which she presented to Mrs Jones after the mayor had declared the carnival open. The children’s fancy dress costumes were very beautiful, tho judges finding it so hard to decide on tho winners that eight instead of six prizes wore given. The same with the babies, there being so many bonny babies that the judges would have liked a prize to have been given to every one. At night there was another gay scene. Electricians had been very busy so that the grounds should bo illuminated, and with the Tramways Band outside and the Hillside Workshops Orchestra inside the carnival spirit was very much to the fore. Misses Nessie and Joan Todd gave two delightful dances which everybody enjoyed. The tireless efforts of the committee to make the carnival a great success were well rewarded. People bought and gave liberally, and when all expenses are paid the kindergarten will benefit to the extent of close on £IOO.
