GRAND NATIONAL MEETING STAKES REDUCED. The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, at its monthly meeting yesterday, decided upon reductions in the stakes and alterations in the conditions lor the Grand National Meeting. A general reduction in stakes was made, the only exceptions being the Grand National Steeplechase, which remains at last year's figure (£1,000), and the Hunt Cup Steeplechase on the second day. which has been raised from £l5O to ‘£l6o. The total reductions amount to £1,200, and the total amount to be distributed avijl be £5,800. The Hunters’ Hurdles, -hitherto the opening event of the meeting, lias been changed to an open flat race of £l6O, six furlongs. The Winter Cup has been reduced from £SOO to £4OO, the Beaufort Steeplechase from £650 to £6OO, the Grand National Hurdles from £750 to £6OO, and the Lincoln Steeplechase from £350 to £IOO. The committee decided to make no alteration at present for future classic events, but to reserve the right to reduce stakes not more than 25 per cent, prior to the date of the first forfeit.

DON HARNESS'S OFFER PREPARED TO GOME TO DOMINION [Per United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, May 3. An offer was received to-day from Mr Don Darkness, designer of the racing car Stewart Enterprise, to come to New Zealand and, if necessary, drive the car himself to prove that it is capable of lowering the one mile land speed record. The cable message was received by Mr Harkncss’s legal representative in Auckland. Mr Darkness asked that the Auckland Automobile Association should bo informed that he was prepared to come to New Zealand immediately and attack the record as soon iis the beach, in the opinion of the association, was suitable.

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL CHALLENGES FOR F.A. TROPHY. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May, 3. Tho council of the New Zealand Football Association to-night acceded to the request of the Auckland Football Association to lift the suspension imposed on a player to the end of 1032 for ungentlemanly conduct. Tho player had seen tho error of his ways. He is to be informed that further misconduct will result in his going out of the game for life. A request from the Buller Association for financial assistance was referred to the Finance Committee. The Wellington and Auckland Associations asked for an extension of time of entry for tho Chatham Cup, as the notice given was not long enough. An extension to May 34 was agreed to. Entries were received as follow:—Bailor 4, Canterbury 6, Otago 4. A challenge from North Auckland for tho Brown Shield was referred to the Competitions Committee. A draft of a proposed insurance scheme for players was received from the Wanganui Association and was referred to Mr A. J. Hydor to report upon. Tho Hawke’s Bay Association asked for tho allocation of boys’ footballs. A similar request came from South Auckland, from which it was reported that three new schools were allowing the game to bo played. It was reported that the primary schools’ tournament for the Webster Shield would probably be played in Huntly, and a supply of footballs was requested. At least five teams _ were expected to compete. An allocation of balls is to be made and an extra £25 is to bo spent for the purpose. Challenges from the Wellington and Canterbury Associations for the Football Association’s trophy, held by Otago, were received on the same day. The names were balloted, and tho Canterbury challenge was accepted. Mr O. F. Ward, chairman of tho Now Zealand Referees’ Association, reported that the Canterbury Referees’ Association bad appealed direct to the Football Association for a ruling on “ arms akimbo.” The Football Association gave a riding, but informed Canterbury that it should have put tho matter'through tho Canterbury Football Association. It was decided to ask tho New Zealand Referees’ Association for a report pu tho matter.

NORTH-SOUTH RUGBY

SELECTION RECOMMENDATION MR EVANS NOT AVAILABLE AS MANAGER. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 4. The Canterbury Rugby Union desires that players should bo selected for the North v.* South Island game irrespective of whether they will be available for tho New Zealand team’s tour of Australia this season. A resolution to this effect was passed by the Management Committee last night. Mr F. T. Jivans, nominated by both tho Canterbury and tho Otago Rugby Union as manager of the New Zealand team to tour Australia, will not be available.
