Mr G. R. Ritchie and Mr C. W. Rattray left to-day for Wellington on Union Company's business. Mr R. Semple, M.P., came from Invercargill this morning and went on for Wellington. He hopes to speak in Dunedin very soon. Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, M.P., passed through Dunedin this morning on his way to Wellington. Mr George Ritchie was a passenger for Auckland by the 11.35 train to-day. The Rev. R. A. Fordo, who has been vicar of Otautau, left for the north this morning, with liis wife and family. They are returning to England. Mr Harold Halligan came to Dunedin from Invercargill last night on business.
Mr A. Barnett travelled by train to Christchurch to-day. Mr Sandys Wunsch, of the Sugar of Milk Company, went by train to-day, from Edondale to Christchurch. The Revs. H. S. Conway and _A, Dayman, of the China Inland Mission, left Dunedin this morning for Hamilton.
The Musselburgh Presbyterian Church congregation has decided to forward a call to the Rev. J. T. Taylor, 8.A., 8.D., of Duntroon. Mr Malcolm Fraser, Government Statistician, has been appointed Undersecretary to the Department of Internal Affairs, in succession to Mr P. J,Kelleber, who has retired on superannuation. The question of the appointment of a successor to Mr Fraser in the Statistics Office has not yet been considered.—Parliamentary reporter. Mr R. S. M‘Kenzie returned last evening by car from Invercargill. The death occurred yesterday at Christchurch of Mr Arthur William Lane. He was horn at Bedford, England, and educated at Northampton, and ho later joined a law firm of that town. He came to New Zealand with his parents some years later, and entered another law office. He was later appointed manager of the Somerset Hotel, Ashburton, of which his father was proprietor. Later, with Colonel Jowsey, Mr Lane took over the United Service Hotel, Christchurch. In Ms younger days Air Lane was an enthusiastic cricketer. For the past few years he had been manager of the picture theatre at Lyttelton.—Christchurch correspondent. Air John Beveridge, wine and spirit merchant, who died at Wellington on Sunday, had been prominent in licensing circles in New. Zealand for many years. At the time of his death he was a member of the executive of the National Council of New Zealand. At one time he was president of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association of New Zealand. He was known to many people in Christchurch as the licensee of the Clarendon Hotel, which house he left about 1915. Ho was also licensee of the Grand Hotel, Wellington, for some time. Although Mr Beveridge did not have- any special interests outside his business, he was particularly well known and respected in licensing circles.— Christchurch correspondent.
