SCHOOL AGE —6 YEARS

CABINET'S DECISION TEACHERS’ SALARIES AND REGRADED SCHOOLS [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.} WELLINGTON, May 3. It was learned officially this morning that it has now been decided to deal by legislation with the question of raising the school admission age. The proposal of the commission has been adopted, and provision will be made in the Finance Bill for the raising of the minimum age of admission to primary schools from five years to six years. It is estimated by the commission that by this means a savings of about £II,OOO will bo effected. Another education clause in the Bill will affect teachers in ' schools whose grade is altered by reason of reduction in the roll number. At present a teacher’s salary is not affected by reduction in the grading of a school, but it is now proposed that, unless the teacher thus affected accepts the offer of a position in a school of the grade in keeping with the salary he is receiving, his salary is to be reduced in accordance with the reduction in the status of the school.
