PENALTIES ON THRIFT.
TO TUB EDITOR. v Sir, —The following case of hardship came under my notice, due to tbp legislation enacted by the present Government:—A married man, who is a very capable and hard worker, followed the usual occupation of a day labourer, digging gardens and work of that nature. Before the present depression ho obtained plenty of work, and was enabled to put by for a rainy day. Ho invested his savings m house property, which he rents. To-day he cannot get work as formerly, and he applied to the Unemployment Committee in tbo district for work. The house in which he invested his savings is Jet to one of the unemployed, who will not pay him any rent, or very little. Yet owing to his having this house and a few paltry pounds in the Post Office, our ali-wiso and beneficent Government says he cannot get unemployment work uptil he spends his few pounds and gets rid of the house, for which he is receiving no rent. Yet he is made to pay 20s dole per annum and Is in the £ on interest and rent accruing from his hard-earned savings. if this is onr boasted British justice it makes one think there is not much m it. after ail. —I am, etc., Justice To Ale. May 2.
