CHESS CLUB

SEASON OPENED The opening of the forty-seventh season of the Otago Chess Club took place last evening in the presence of a large assemblage of members and visitors. The president (Air R. M'Dormid) presided, and introduced the deputy-mayor (Air F, W. Mitchell), who had consented officially to open the club’s season in place of the mayor (Air R. S. Black), who was absent in Wellington. Air Alitchell, in a few appropriate remarks, stated that it gave him great pleasure to be preient. His knowledge of the game of chess was very limited, being confined to tho names of the pieces and their moves. It was one of the oldest and most intellectual of games. He hoped it some future date to be able to visit the club and gain some further instruction in the game. Air Alitchell then presented the prizes won by the members during the year as follows: —Senior champion, L. I). Coombs; junior champion, A. Al'Lean; handicap tournament, R. Watt 1, W. Herhert2; ladder tournament, A. J. Al'Dermntt. Tho following arc the names of the players who took pan in tho opening match, which resulted ns follows ;
