FOOTBALL

RUGBY

O.R.F.U. COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night, Mr S. G. Stycho (president) in the chair. MANAGER FOR NEW ZEALAND TEAM. It was decided, as there seemed no one available from Otago for the position of manager of the New Zealand team for Australia, to nominate Mr F. T. Evans, of Christchurch. Mr Harris, who remarked that Canterbury had nominated Mr Evans, said he would be a good man for the position and had done a lot for football. PASSES FOR UNEMPLOYED. The Town Clerk (Mr G. A. Lewin) wrote acknowledging receipt of sixty passes entitling unemployed workers to free admission to the match at Carisbrook last Saturday and expressing the thanks of the local Unemployment Committee. It was noted that the same number of passes would be sent each week, and every endeavour would be made to distribute them equitably among genuine relief workers. GATE TAKINGS. The Secretary reported that the gate takings at Carisbrook on Saturday amounted to £7l 15s, and at all grounds for the day to £73 10s. Expenses amounted to £lO 18s. TRANSFERS. Transfers were granted as follows: Gordon J. Morrison, from Palmerston to Southern. D. Leach, from Birchfield Club (West Coast) to Alhambra. J. Morton, from the Little Wanganui Club (Westport) to Alhambra. A. Miller, from Toko. Club to Taiori. J. Prendeville, from Nightcaps to Training College. J. Connor, from Ravensboume to Southern. . . R. Geary, from Pirates to Taien. MATCH WITH NORTH OTAGO. The North Otago Union wrote asking for the visit of an Otago team to play the North Otago rep. team. —It was decided to send an Otago team on September 17, the day of the Payne Trophy match in Dunedin, in which the local premier club will bo engaged. APPRECIATION OP BLIND. Mr C. R. Allen wrote: “ I have been instructed by the social club for the blind of-Otago and Southland to cpnvey to the Rugby Union its satisfaction at the decision to broadcast descriptions of the games in Dunedin. The club members, old Rugby players among its members, and to these and others a running description of a Rugby game is a great pleasure.” NEW BOOT BUTTONS. Mr V. G. Cavanagh brought up the question of the danger to players through the nails on the pegs in their boots coming through. He thought these nails constituted a danger. Mr Cavanagh showed some boots to prove his assertion. Of course, referees were instructed to watch to see whether the pegs were dangerous. Mr Cavanagh said that a new style of peg was now on the market, and he thought something should bo done to get players to use it.—Mr D. M. Stuart also spoke of the danger of the nailed-on peg. The new pegs, he said, were of composition. Dr Perry said the nailed-on button was dangerous, and, moreover, a wound inflicted by a protruding nail was likely to become septic.—Mr A. M'Donald said that a set of new buttons would be rather expensive.—Mr H. Harris said there was no doubt that some referees allowed players to play too much on the ground and to walk over other players, too. —It was decided to suggest to clubs that they should provide thenplayers with the new buttons, and that the Finance Committee go into the question of obtaining a supply of the new buttons for distribution to the clubs. EARLY GAMES AT CARISBROOK. The Alhambra Club wrote stating its senior team would be willing to play at Carisbrook occasionally at 1.30. INTERPRETATIONS. Mr R. M'Kenzie, hon. secretary of the Otago Referees’ Association, wrote as follows:—“ The two points that were referred by the Referees’ Association to the Judicial Committee were as follow:—(l) Just as the bell is sounded for time a defending player kicks the ball over his own goal line and it is forced. Should the referee blow his whistle for time or should he order a scrum at the spot from which the ball was kicked back?—The committee’s decision was that the scrum must be ordered. (2) A player with the ball in his possession is running down the touchline, and during the course of his run he swings the ball out over the touchline. Is the ball to be. considered as being in touch?—The decision of the committee was that in this case the ball is not in touch.” APPEAL COMMITTEE. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that at the annual meeting Messrs F. H. Campbell, J. Hutchison, and H. F. Sincock were appointed the Appeal Committee of the union for the current year.—Noted. SUSPENDED. A junior player who was ordered off by the referee for striking an opponent was suspended for two playing Saturdays. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Senior grade.—Union v. Kaikorai, Bishopscourt No. 1 (Mr R.
