THREAT TO STRIKE
AN UNCOMPROMISING REJOINDER

CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. ' Replying to the men’s threat of A strike unless the twelve dismissed men are reinstated, the Tramway Board has sent a circular letter to every employee, one paragraph of which states:; “ The hoard wishes the staff to under- < stand that refusal to work on Wednesday or later will mean the termination' of employment by an employee himself. Men so acting will receive from' the Government authorities a refund of their contributions to the National Provident Fund. The board will also receive a refund of the moneys it has paid in the past in respect of each employee, and the whole pension scheme, which has proved so beneficial in past years to the men who reach retiring age, will be broken in respect to the men who leave their work. The men themselves will also, of course, give up their employment with the board.” The men are asked to let the traffic manager know on ' Tuesday whether they will continue work. _ i The Tramway Board to-day inserted an advertisement in the newspapers inviting applications for volunteers willing to accept employment under the existing conditions in the event of a strike on Wednesday. The positions to be filled include motormen, conductor!,. - ■ fms drivers, etc. . . .
