W.C.T.U.

SOUTH DUHEDIH BRANCH There was a full attendance of members and friends on Thursday afternoon in the Cargill Hoad Wesley Schoolroom, Mrs Donaldson presiding. Correspondence from the secretary of National Council of Women and Mrs Peryman, editor ‘ White Ribbon,’ was read, and small sums passed for payment. Miss Macandrew, delegate from Dunedin Central W.C.T.U. to the recent Wanganui Convention, then gave an account of the doings, remits, and general activities of tho gathering, also of the unfailing hospitality shown by citizens wherever the conventon may be held. Miss Macandrcw’s report stated that convention granted the sum of £9 10s to the relief of sufferers in the earthquake area; that six new branches of the W.C.T.U. had been formed; that the total membership 1 of the adult and junior branches now stood at 6,951; and that the next annual convention would be held in Invercargill. Miss Macandrow received a hearty vote of thanks for her report. Discussion of methods of helping the unemployed followed, and the question was raised; Whether the W.C.T.U. as an organisation had given its time and energy towards the solution of the problem of unemployment. The opinion was expressed that what men really needed was steady work. Some members felt that in the Dominion W.C.T.U. were women capable of tackling the problem and helping towards a practical solution. There was an animated discussion.
