SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT SOUTHERN WINS SENIOR COMPETITION Southern, who fielded a fast and well-balanced side, won the seven-a-side tournament which opened the Rugby season on Saturday. Carisbrook was in excellent condition, and a crowd of about 1,200 watched tho games, which were mostly fast and open. A bright, warm sun shone throughout tho afternoon. Kino teams competed in tho senior competition, in which the final was contested between Southern and Pirates. It is worthy of note that these clubs wore in the final of the seven-a-sido last year, when Pirates won. On Saturday, however. Southern fielded the betterbalanced and cleverer side, and won tho final by 3 to 0, though Pirates contested every inch of the way. The winning try was scored by Simon, the Southern half-back, who displayed some of his best form, a happy augury for his club for the coming season. Pirates have secured a fast and useful player in Trevathan (five-eighths), who represented North Otago in recent years. The junior competition was won easily by tho ’Varsity seven, who put up the highest scores during tho afternoon. High School 11, Zingari 4. ’Varsity 10, Southern 0, Union 8, Taieri 6, SEMI-FINALS. High School 9, Port Chalmers 3. ’Varsity 25, Union 0, FINAL. ’Varsity 11, High School 0. The ’Varsity seven were Jolly, Uttley, Race, Hoyle, Henderson, Greenslade, and Turner. OTHER CENTRES WELLINGTON The Wellington Rugby season was opened in ideal weather. Tho grounds were in perfect condition. No uniformity was observed regarding scrum formation, three teams following the old style. Results: — Poneke 39, University 8. Oriental 7, Hutt 6. Petone 16, Marist 5. Wellington 16, Wellington College Old Boys 6. Berhampore 13, Miramar 8. Eastbourne 19, Athletic 8. CHRISTCHURCH The season was opened in perfect weather.
