AUSTRALIA TO MAKE VALVES

The establishment of a radio valvemaking works in Australia has been advanced a step by the visit of Mr S. M. Grime, assistant manager of Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd., to the United States and Canada, whence he returned to Sydney a few days ago. _ Last year it was decided to lay down a plant' for tire manufacture of valves, and Mr Grime and two engineers visited the principal works as a preliminary to the launching of the Australian enterprise. As the result of his trip, Mr Grime says that conditions in Australia are peculiarly favourable to the step contemplated. To accommodate the extra staff for the new valve-making industry will necessitate extensions to the existing works. Within a year or two, Mr Grime believes, the firm will be in a position to supply the requirements of Australia in respect of valves. Incidentally, Mr Grime said his trip had shown him the wisdom of the Commonwealth Government’s embargo on the importation of radio receivers into Australia. Owing to depression in the United States the year’s- output of 7.000. receivers could ont bo sold. Only about 3,000,000 had been purchased by the American public, leaving 4.000. which were being dumped at any price into any country where they could be admitted.
