OXFORD PARTY BANNED

FIAT OF THE PROCTORS There was much comment at Oxford recently on tho last-minute ban which the proctors placed on a big party arranged by Oxford undergraduates, to bo held on a Saturday night. One of the reasons given is that the proctors thought it possible that certain uninvited people from London might arrive dressed as women. The invitations stated that guests were to attend in costume representing some personage at the Court of George 111. Tho party was to have been held at tho Hotel St. Ives, and the guests were invited by Mr Francis Fay Hill-Smith, Mr Edward Soott-Neli, Mr lan Greenlees, and Mr Archibald Colquhoun. Everything was ready at a-quarter to 6, when the proctors’ fiat arrived forbidding any undergraduates to attend. Miss Phillips, proprietress of the hotel, said that at least £6O had been spout in preparations for the party. “Very, distinguished people,” she said, “came from London, but when they heard that their sons and brothers had been forbidden to attend they returned home. I have not the remotest idea why the party was banned. It certainly would not have been a wild party.” Mr Scott-Snell, of Christchurch, one of the hosts, said that many more people came from London than they expected. “ If the proctors stopped tho party on account of these,” ho said, " I wish they had told us earlier, as we would have been very glad to have kept those people away.”
