ILLINOIS PRIMARY ELECTIONS UNUSUAL VIOLENCE IN CHICAGO Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. CHICAGO, April 12. The Illinois primary elections were marked by the usual violence in Chicago to-day, where 40,000 police and poll watchers concentrated to prevent fraud, organised terrorism, and intimidation of voters. One serious case of shooting, at least one kidnapping, and able brawls and fist fights resulted, and over 100 known gangsters and hoodlums were arrested. Although the electorate selected a full list for State and Congressional offices, principal interest centred in the local offices at Chicago, where factional favouritism resulted in violence.
A feature of the primary elections was tho greatly increased Democratic vote, which Is regarded as another repudiation of the Hoover Administration. The “wets” apparently gained in both parties. A Republican precinct captain was caught in tho cross fire of revolver shots between a Democratic precinct captain and five gangsters who were attacking him, and ho is not expected to live. Pour gangsters, impersonating tho police, kidnapped a Republican precinct captain, stole 2,000d0l of his election campaign fund, and threw hiin into a coal yard. Repeated reports of threatened kidnappings and intimidation of voters by gangsters who brandished revolvers kei the police busy, and they were also active in dispersing groups of “ floaters ” from the various polling places.
