ANNA PARADOWSKA-SZELAGOWSKA

POLISH DELEGATE TO THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

For the first time a place was given to a woman in tho Polish Delegation which attended tho League of Nations Assembly. Mrs Anna ParadowskaSzelagowska is a well-known worker in the efforts made by Polish women for equal rights. Before the war she was one of the active pioneers of the woman’s movement in Poland, according to a report in ‘ The Vote.’ Since tho war she has taken an active part in the work of the Political Club of progressive women. In 1928 slio became an energetic supporter of the League of Women for social work and citizenship; she is a member of its Central Committee and chairman of tho section for foreign affairs. A specialist in financial and commercial problems, tho delegate will hold a distinguished position in the history of the professional movement among Polish ivomon. She is one of tho very few women of any nationality to have attained a high position in the banking world. For many years she was a chief accountant and an attorney in the Joint Agricultural Bank of the Polish Estates. Later she was made a director of another bank. The Professional Association of tho Polish banking trade appointed her as honorary member of the association—the only woman member. This fact alone proves her high competence in that special field.

In addition to her professional work Mrs Paradowska-Szelagowska gives much time to social service. She took part in tho foundation of tho “ League of Vocational Education for Women,” and led the section of commercial courses for young women clerks, lecturing and bookkeeping. During the German occupation she was a member of tbo committee ot tho first great Women’s Congress Association. In her publications and writings she usually deals with problems_ of the women’s movement. Her activities in this field have latterly been most successful. Her main interest lies in the position of women in relation to world problems. As a convinced, sincere, and enthusiastic pacifist, Mrs _ ParadowskaSzelagowska is deeply interested in disarmament. As a worker for peace she has long collaborated with different women’s international organisations; she has recently become a member of a commission for Peace and the League of Nations in connection with the International Alliance lor Suffrage and Equal Citizenship. She brings to her public activities a keen, precise, and logical spirit, a peaceful and wellbalanced character, careful work, and experience; such qualities cannot fail to be of great help to tho Polish cause in the international field.
