PROPOSED REDUCTION IN CHARGES
RECEIVING AND DELIVERY OF CARGO A suggestion that there should be a reduction in the charges for the receiving and delivering of cargo by 3d 'per ton. which was brought forward at last night’s meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was referred to the Economies Committee to report to tho Standing Committee.' [n accordance with notice of motion, Cautain M'Donald moved—" That, in order t-> give importers and exporters full benefit of the reduction in the receiving' and delivery contract rate from Is 81d to Is 6d per ton, each of the charges fixed by section 12 of by-law No. 20, 1930, for the receiving and de-, livering of cargo ue reduced by 3d .per ton ” He said that the board had got the reduction, and he. thought the Importers’ Association was entitled to get the benefit of the reduction. Mr H. C. Campbell said that, he would be pleased to second the motion, but there were certain aspects which should be considered, and ho would suggest to Captain M'Donald that the matter be referred to the Standing Committee of the board. . Mr D. F. H. Sharpe said that it was nice to be generous, but it was a question as to whether tho board was in a position to bo generous. He thought the matter should go to the Economies Committee. Mr J. B. Waters also stated that he thought the matter should bo considered by the Economies Committee. Mr F. E. Tyson said that the concession to importers was long overdue, and he had very great sympathy indeed with the importers. After further discussion it was decided that the matter should be referred to the Economies Committee to report to the Standing Committee.
