SATURDAY'S ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Otago amateur athletic championship meeting at Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon next has drawn larger entries than ever before, and besides greatly increased nominations from Dunedin athletes are coming from Drummond, Winton, Invercargill, Milton, Mosgiel, Palmerston and Oamaru to take part, and the competition for interclub supremacy should be intensely exciting. The biggest attraction of the day will be the first appearance at an amateur meeting in Dunedin of A. A. Cameron the phenomenal North Otago field athlete, who is expected to go close to New Zealand records in the high jump, hop, step, and jump, and long jump, while there are good judges who are predicting that given favourable conditions, he will do 48ft or 49ft in the hop, step, and jump. The 100yds championship has drawn a big field, and should be a thrilling race, the competitors including the brilliant ex-professional star, C, W. J. Pierson, of Invercargill, W. Allen, and J. Robilliard (well-known representative footballers), H. J. Pearce (a speedy sprinter who is a New Zealand, Rugby League representative), and many other well-known performers, most of whom will also be seen in action in the quarter-mile championship of Otago, which should be one of the really thrilling races of the day, the contestants including the ex- Wellington champion, T. Pickering, who won the Southland championship in 51 2-ssec recently, and the present title-holder, A. L. Price who are expected to have a great battle. The half-mile has likewise drawn a splendid field, including Pickering, E. A. Taylor (present champion), and L. C. M‘Lachlan (ex-cham-pion), and the mile is a race which is creating much interest, the starters including J. G. Barnes (winner of nearly a hundred races), J. J. Morns (one of the finest distance men Otago has produced), and A. R. Geddes (the promising young mnner who has done some fine performances this season). Ihe Now Zealand champion, G. S. Cabot, is among the starters in the walks, the pole vault should witness an exciting tussle between B. Provo and R. O. Johnson, and among the large entries in the cycling events are J C. Fogarty, G. Smith, J. S. Parsons (Dunedin), R. Sounness and L. Hagerty (Winton), A. Forrest (Winton), and a number of Milton riders. There should be some fine riding witnessed, and altogether the whole programme promises to be one of the best ever presented in Dunedin.
