A SUGGESTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Most Dunedinites have heard of the very good work done by the “Smith” family in Wellington and other centres. Last night I was given a further instance of the method by which Wellington people hear of necessitous cases in their midst. It appears that B stations (or at least one of them) announce a desperate case of hardship once a week, for the alleviation of which hardship subscriptions are invited. Each instance of poverty thus announced—without any names being mentioned, of course—is sponsored by some welfare worker, and the public is thereby assured that the family being helpeu is worthy of assistance, it seems to me that something of a like nature could be done in Dunedin to help those who find themselves in a sorry plight in this time of rampant want and direst poverty.—l am, etc, Cms.
