OBITUARY

COUNCILLOR C. H. HAYWARD Widespread regret will be felt at the death of Cr C. H. Hayward, who passed away yesterday afternoon after a very short illness. Though he had not been in his usual health for some time, Mr Hayward maintained his cheerful spirit, and his sudden end must have come as a painful surprise to his many friends. A sudden heart attack in the street caused his ■ removal to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, and death occurred within less than twenty-four hours. Of a bright and cheerful disposition, Or Hayward will be missed in municipal circles and in the many other activities with which he was connected. Born in Dunedin sixty-eight years ago, he was a son of the late Captain C. E. Hayward. His early years were spent in the Gatlins district, and he received his primary education at the Gatlins School. As a youth he was apprenticed to the firm of Messrs A. and T. Inglis as a cabinetmaker, and, after qualifying in the trade, he started the firm of Messrs Brundell, Hayward, and Hope, which aftenvards became known as Messrs C. and W. Hayward Ltd., and on severing his connection with the latter firm, commenced business as the North End Furnishing

Company. Following his election to the old Iloslyn Borough Council* Mr Hayward held many public positions, and had fifteen years’ service to his credit as a member of the City Council. For nearly ten years he held various chairmanships in the • council, among which may be mentioned those of the Gas, Library, and General Committees. He also served ■as a member of the Harbour Board, the Fire Board, the Drainage Board, and the King Edward Technical College"’ Board of Governors. Always taking a keen interest in sport, he was actively associated with the administration of yachting and bowling. He was a keen yachtsman, and held the office of vice-commodore of the\ Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club. He was a well-known and popular member of the Dunedin Bowling Club, of which he was a vice-president. In addition, Mr Hayward was an enthusiastic supporter of the Kiwi Swimming Club, of which he was also a vice-president. He was well-known in Masonic circles, being a Past Master of Lodge Otago. He was intimately connected with the Anglican Church allhis life, having been for many years a Sundhy school teacher and vestryman at both All Saints’ and St. John’s, Iloslyn. He was married fortyone years ago Inst Christmas Day to Miss'Laura M. Eyre, and is survived by his widow, a daughter (Mrs A. L. Canter) and three sons—Messrs Laurie, Rowland, and Charles Hayward, all of Dunedin. The flag at the Town Hall was flown at half-mast yesterday afternoon as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased councillor. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon.
