SNOWY RIVER COMPANY. The Snowy River Sluicing Company, which went to allotment last Friday, when the 20,000 shares which were offered were quickly disposed of and applications were received for about 12,000 more, proposes to operate a claim consisting of 164 acres of alluvial ground situated on the north bank of the Snowy River, about fourteen miles south of Reefton. The wash is overlying a soft false bottom, which will permit the easy construction of tail races, and there is ample room for the disposal of the tailings. An adequate supply of water is assured from the Snowy River. Sluicing operations will be commenced some time this year, when the race which will convey the water to the claim from a point "about seven miles further up the river has been completed. The preliminary survey work is now under way, and it is "hoped to have the race completed in about six or eight months’ time. About twenty years ago a drive was put in on portion of what is now the company’s property, and excellent returns were then obtained by methods which were decidedly crude when compared with modern sluicing methods. More recently the ground was surveyed by Messrs J. Pfhalert and D. Ross, and verification was obtained of the claims which had previously been made in regard to the rich nature of the ground. BIG RIVER MINES. LOCATION OP HEADQUARTERS. [Per United Press Association.] GREYMOUTH, January 21. A meeting of the West Coast shareholders of the Big River Mines Ltd. was held to-night. f The secretary (Mr T. H. Lee) stated that an endeavour was being made by North Island shareholders to transfer the headquarters to Wellington. The South Island shareholders were over 198,000, against, 70,277 in the North .Island. i The following resolution was passed: —“ That this mepting of West Coast shareholders of the Big River Gold Mines Ltd. regrets to learn of the attempt that is being made to remove the management of the company from Reefton to Wellington, j notwithstanding that hitherto the mine has been most successfully managed at Reefton for the past forty years, and this meeting is of opinion that it is contrary to the best interests of cthe company to have the mine managed elsewhere than close to the scene of operations at the mine; also that steps be taken to secure the support of all South Island shareholders (who hold five-sixths of the shares in the company) to retain the registered office and management at Reefton as authorised in the prospectus under which the company was promoted,” BUTTER AND CHEESE. THE BUTTER MARKET. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 21. Until the details of Germany’s tariff charges are announced .butter tiaders are uncertain how they will affect the market for Australian and New Zealand butter. The general opinion that the results will not be serious, as Germany s imports of butter from Britain in 1931, consisting mostly of Atistrahan and New Zealand; with a small quantity or Argentine, were only 59,602 cwt. It is not thought likely that the Danish iniports into Britain will be much increased. In the meantime the market is inactive as buyers are awaiting developments. Australian and New Zealand declined about 2s to 3s.
