SANDERS CUP
—♦ TROPHY PRESENTED TO CANTERBURY [Feb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 21. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) presented .the Sanders Cup to the Canterbury crew at a public function held in the Town Hall Concert Chamber todav. " You vachtsmen have given us all“ an extraordinarily interesting exhibition. All who have seen the races have been impressed by the seamanship displayed, and I for my part, as an amateur, must express my astonishment at the manosuvres that the small craft were able to make under the influence of the competent seamen in charge of them,” said the mayor. In taking the cup, Mr Brassel said: “ We were very pleased to win the cup, and we wish to congratulate all the other crews on the splendid fight they put up. I think they are all good losers. Anyone can be a good winner, but everyone cannot be a good loser. We will do our best to hold the cup next year, and I hope it will be as good a fight as this one.” Mr Arthur Johnston, skipper of the Betty, said: “ Although beaten this year, we have no regrets, and we take it all in a real good sporting spirit—in the spirit which the Sanders Cup contest was intended to foster.” The chairman of the Otago Yacht Association said last year that if there was a better skipper in New Zealand than George Brassel he would like to meet him. “ I should sav that Brassel is very hard to beat. He is a worthy opponent, sailing a good, clean, and square race.”
