DUNEDIN PLAYERS SGDRING WELL DEARE DEFEATS WALKER'S RINK SINGLES FINALISTS ALL LOCAL MEN [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 22. Playing well below form, Walker’s Auckland Club rink, wlio up till tlieu bad no, loss, were decisively defeated by Deare (Dunedin Club) in one of the final games of the dominion rinks championship to-day. Had Walker won the game, with the win would halve gone the championship, as Deare had had one loss. As it is another game between these two rinks will be played this afternoon, and will constitute the final.

Walker's rink looked anything but champions on their form this morning. The skip’s running shots were comparatively poor, and his inaccurate drawing was in sharp contrast to his previous form. The failure of the Auckland rink was due just as much to the severe falling off in de Launay’s play. The Auckland third played like a secondrater.

Deare’s rink, which had a fine lead in Gregory, played their usual consistent and accurate game. The first sharp turn of the scoring in Deare’s favour was on the third or fourth head. Walker was lying four, but Deare, with his last shot, drew alongside kitty perfectly, took the four from Walker, and made a difference of five in the scores. The difference between the scores was widened to 21 to 7 in Deare’s favour at the sixteenth head, and the game ended on the nineteenth head with Deare 16 up—24 to 8. Accurate driving on the part of Scott (Caledonian) was mainly responsible for the defeat of Routley (Kelburn) in one of the final games of the singles championship. Both men were about equal in drawing in the tricky wind, but Scott kept Routley’s score down by full board drives when the head was not in his favour. He burnt several. Routley’s method of attempting to save .e head was by a yard on shot. Scott won by 4, time being called after the twentieth head. Scott got two on the first head, but three came to his opponent on the next. Routley was four up at the fifth, but Scott then struck a scoring patch, and was eight up at the eleventh head. Routley took three off at the sixteenth and four off at the nineteenth, but ones on the other heads still left Scott in front. The Dunedin man was one up on the twentieth head. The draw for the games early this afternoon is:—Rinks final: Deare (Dunedin) v. Walker (Auckland). _ Singles semi-final: Scott (Caledonian) v. Hinchcliff (Caledonian). It is now certain that the tournament will not finish this afternoon, and will have to be continued to-morrow, owing to a number of games yet to ,be decided in the pairs competition. Both the pairs and the singles were advanced a further stage to-day. The semi-final of the singles between J. Scott (Caledonian), an ex-dominion champion, and Routley (of Kelburn) attracted keen interest, Scott won, 21-17. RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. —Semi-final.— Gregory, Gardiner, Morrison, G. A. Deare (Dunedin) 24, Macky, Keys, de Launay, M. Walker (Auckland) 8. The same rinks meet in the final this afternoon. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. —Semi-final. — ■ J, Scott (Caledonian) 21, M. Routley (Kelburn) 17. The other players left in are C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn) and J. Hinchcliff (Caledonian). PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. —Winners of Greens. — Barrington Green (Section E). — Bremner and Hardley (West End, Auckland) 25: Bailey and Worsley (Hornby) 17.. Sumner Green (Section I). —Edwards and Hunt (Temuka) 26; Mackay and Forster (Caversham) 11. NOTES ON THE PLAY [Special to the ‘Star,’] CHRISTCHURCH, January 22. By tile defeat of Routley by Scott Dunedin gets Hie. first, second, and third prize money in the singles. Scott held a slight lead from the start, and loft Routley to get 3 to tie at the twentieth head, when the bell went. Ho just failed to rest out Scott’s shot bowl, which would have given him 3, and Scott won 21-17. • • Play was ragged owing to a tricky wind, which at times upset unoccupied seats and forms. The rink game between Deare and Walker was. full of excitement, with some splendid shots on both sides. Auckland took some time to find the green, and the Dunedinites ran to 11 before Walker scored. Then he could get only singles, while Deare got twos and threes. At the eighteenth head Walker retired, his first rinks loss. All the Dunedin men played well, but the same could not be said of their opponents.

Forster failed in his doubles game with Hunt, retiring at the sixteenth head.
