BURNS ANNIVERSARY

Scotsmen the world over will on Monday evening next be celebrating the birth of Scotland’s bard, Robert Burris. The Dunedin Burns Clnb will keep his memory green by_ holding an entertainment in His Majesty’s Theatre, when some of the finest gems of his songs will bo rendered in a manner worthy of the occasion. Born in a humble cot, with few opportunities for education, Burns with his own effort, showing his great genius, left in his poems a monument that stands for ever in all Scottish hearts. His poem on 1 The Cottar’s Saturday Night,’ with its simple, home-liko influences, gives some glimpses of his early training, while his love songs, with their irresistible appeal and charm, place him on a pedestal above all contemporaries. The items to bo presented at the celebration will be selected from his finest songs, and an enjoyable evening may be looked forward to. The speaker will be the Rev. Hugh Graham, who lately arrived here from Canada, and who will speak on a present-day topic, ‘ The Ecllowship of Burns.’ Misses Mary Pratt, and Evelyn Shepard will be heard to advantage, while in Mr Arthur Macdonald an opportunity will be given of hearing an outstanding Scottish singer. Other popular vocalists are Messrs C. Hawes, Jehu Kennedy, and a male quartet party, while variety will be lent by items by Mr A. Sligo, A. Pettitt’s Trio, a reel party, Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, and Purus Choir. Patrons are advised to reserve early to avoid disappointment. Plans are at Bcgg’s.
