SHALE OIL
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTRALIA Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. CANBERRA, January 8. The Prime Minister’s Department announces that Australia is now producing oil on a commercial basis. The fint contract for the. sale of shale oil produced at Newnes, near Litbgow, has been completed, the Australian Gaslight Company having purchased 60,000 gallons. _ This development is regarded as of vital importance, and marks tie beginning of a major industry which should soon come into active compeiition with powerful overseas oil interest.
