RETURNS FOR THE YEAR DEGREASE IN NUMBER OF OFFENCES According to the official court returns for the year, there has been slightly less crime committed during the past twelve months than during the year 1930. In 1931 the number of persons who were arrested or who appeared in the Police Court on summons for various offences was 2,7C2 (2,C34 males and 128 females), whereas in 1930 the total number of offences was 3 ; 095. Juvenile offenders during 1931 numbered 192 (176 males and 16 females), while in 1930 the_ total was 210. The amount paid in fees and fines in 1931 was £7,630 6s 9d, a decrease of £126 3s 9d since 1930 during which year the corresponding sum was £7,756 10s 6d. . , , The sums received in the four quarters were:—

CIVIL COURT FIGURES. In the Magistrate’s Court the number of plaints entered during 1931 was 5,652, the quarterly figures being as follow: —January to March, 1,445; April to June, 1,556; July to September, 1,469; October to December, 1,182. The cases that were tried during 1931 numbered 3,569. In 1930 there were 5,829 plaints, and 3,229 cases were tried. The total amounts (shillings and pence omitted) sued for during the quarters of each year are as follow:
