BRITISH ARCHITECTS BEST
Some of the most striking buildings in the modern world have been the work of British architects, who are now recognised as being at the top in their profession. One of the most recent achievements to their credit is the winning of tho £2,500 prize for the best plans for a memorial lighthouse to bo erected at San Domingo in honour of Columbus. . The contest was open to the architects of the whole world—it has been won by a Nottingham man, Mr J. L. Gleave, who practises in Manchester. Tbe plans prepared by Mr Gleave made special provision for stability in earthquakes, which are a very real danger in San Domingo. _ But this is the best site for a memorial lighthouse to the great navigator, for it was here that Columbus established tbe first European garrison in the New World.
