Mr and Mrs Sydney Strong, of Gisborne, who spent Christmas in Dunedin, have now left to spend some time in Grey mouth. Mr and Mrs B. S. Irwin and Miss Irwin are spending a few days at “ Ravenscliffe,” Woodside. Mr and Mrs D. Hill and their daughter are spending the Christmas vacation at Queenstown. Mr and Mrs Henry Reid and Miss Reid are the guests of Mrs E. Howden, Park Lane, Timaru. Miss Edith Winslow (Roxburgh) is the guest of Mrs Shand, Pitt street. - The engagement is announced of Annie Margaret, second daughter of the late Mr A. The engagement is announced of Evelyn Annie, elder daughter of Mrs D. M'Gregor, St. Clair, to William Joseph, elder son of Mr and Mrs T. Shields, of Wyndham.

Professor Stanton Hicks, of Adelaide University, and Mrs Hicks (nee 'Florence Haggitt) and their six-months-old son will arrive by the first express from the north on Thursday and will be tho guests of Mrs John Haggitt at Warrington during the next few weeks.

Miss Gwen Webster, principal of Otago School of Dancing, entertained her pupils at a very delightful tea party on Saturday, December 19. During the programme prizes were presented to Joan Anthony, Sylvia Davis, 1. Scott, N. Glengarry, L. Hewitt. Miss Webster was the recipient of many delightful gifts from her pupils, wishing her every success for the coming year.

Miss Cargill entertained some thirtyfive guests at her usual Christmas party on Friday afternoon at her residence “ Wildwood.” The hostess, attired in a becoming gown of black georgette, received her guests in the drawing room, where a wealth of Paul Scarlet roses formed the effective decorative scheme which is always such a feature of this party. Among those present were Mr and Mrs Bernard Petre and family, Mr and Mrs W. Petre, Mr and Mrs Mitchell and family, Mr and Mrs Napier, Major and Mrs Richardson, Mesdamcs Easther, Caddie, and Hart, Misses Cutton, Gilkison, Henry, Burch (London), Amy Cutton, Richardson, and Easther, Messrs A. B. Johnston, R. Nancarrow, W. Johnston, DigbySmith, H. and A. Johnston.

A very successful] year’s work was brought to a close on Tuesday of last week when tho students of the Octagon School of Business and Matriculation spent a very enjoyable evening at tho home of tho principal (Mrs hreemanGreene), Moana crescent, Anderson’s Bay. Dancing and games were indulged in, and during the supper adjournment tho students presented tho principal with a beautiful crystal fruit dish as a token of their appreciation. The Orkney and Shetland Choir spent a very enjoyable evening at tho residence of Mrs Begg, St. Clair, on Wednesday of last week, as a wind up for the year. A very attractive programme was arranged by the secretary (Mr Harpur). The following rendered items;—Duet, Miss Kennedy, Miss Baxter; sougs—Misses Baxter and Kennedy, Mr Harpur, Messrs Smith, Currie, Johnstone, Beadle, Burnett, Stevenson. Games and competitions were carried out by Mr M'Mastcr, the elopement game causing a great deal of amusement. After supper Mr Stevenson, on behalf of the choir, presented Miss Baxter and Mr Andrews with a small Christmas gift in appreciation of their services during the year. Dancing was then indulged in until a late hour. At tho conclusion of the evening Mr Currie thanked_ Mrs Begg for her kindness. The choir resumes practice on February 3.
