A JOCKEY’S DEATH
fPer United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 29. An accident in the first race, the Fcrgusson Handicap, at Ellerslio to-day resulted in the death on his way to the hospital of the successful light-woigh horseman, H. E. Stockley, who had proved himself one of tho best apprentice riders in Now Zealand. Btockloy was riding Exaggeration. Tho accident occurred soon after the field had passed the six furlongs post, when tho loading horses wore racing in close company Exaggeration, when running up fast on tho outside of a couple of horses, went down suddenly, and Stockley was thrown heavily. It appeared as if he was struck after falling by a couple of horses just behind, and after tho field had passed he lay prostrate on the ground. He was hurried to hospital by tho ambulance, but before be could be admitted be bad died from head and oilier injuries. An inquiry into tbe accident was opened by tbe stewards, and was adjourned until Friday.
