Mr George Stewart, of Mooney and Co., went north by train to-day to embark for America and the Continent, and is arranging to be back in about four months. He is accompanied by his eldest son. Mr W. W. Callender, at present manager of the Timaru office of the Alliance Assurance Company, will succeed Mr A. Burn as manager of the Dunedin office on the latter’s retirement on superannuation on December 31. Mr D. T. Todd, formerly of the Wellington staff, will succeed Mr Callender at Timaru. Mr J. A. Johnson, M.A., formerly, head master of the Main School in Timaru, is retiring this month on superannuation from the position of principal of the Teachers’ College, Hobart. Mr Johnson is now on his way to New Zealand to call on his friends, and intends to visit Timaru, Wellington, and Dunedin early in January. Mr William Stanley Allan, of Dunedin, has been appointed assistant master at the Southland Boys’ High School in place of Mr F. J. Baillie, who has resigned to accept a position in Suva.Mr Allan received his secondary education at the Waitaki Boys’ High School,and subsequently attended Otago University and Lincoln College. He sat his final this year for the degree of bachelor of science in agriculture. In addition to his agricultural studies he has had practical experience of farm management and has undertaken important research work. On the field of sport Mi* Allan has met with remarkable success. At Waitaki he was captain of the first eleven and in the first fifteen for several years. He played first grade cricket and football in Dunedin, and he represented Lincoln College for three years at Rugby, as well as playing for the Canterbury Southern Sub-union.-He won,.the New Zealand University middle-weight boxing championship in 1928 and 1929, in the latter year gaining the medal for the most scientific boxer in the tournament. He takes up his new duties on February 2. Mr E. C. Smith left by this morning’s train for Wellington. Recent arrivals at the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs D. W. Madden,Miss Madden, Master Madden (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Russell Cordery, Captain A. Owles, Mr and Mrs P. N.Quartermain, Mr P. O. Webb (Christchurch). Mr and Mrs L. Watson, Mr F.Campbell (Wellington), Mr A. R. Harris, Mr A. Marshall (Christchurch), Mr J. R. Darling (Oamaru), Mr J. Parcell (Cromwell), are staying at the Excelsior Hotel.
